3 Easy Tips for Photo Editing in Lightroom

Do you ever wonder how bloggers, influencers, and brands seem to have the best photography money can buy – without a million dollar photography budget? Let us loop you into one of the industries best-kept secrets: Photo editing!

When we are talking about photo editing, we aren’t talking about the filters you can slap on in Instagram. We are talking about time-intensive, frustrating, but oh-so-rewarding photo editing that takes place in Lightroom. But don’t get discouraged, with a little training and guidance, anyone can do it!

Here are the 3 things to keep in mind when you are editing your photos in Lightroom:

1. Consistency Is Key

Consistency is key when it comes to photography. When you think about some of your favorite brands, chances are, they are using the same photo editing. Why? Brand consistency and recognition. By editing your images with the same filters and presets, you will create a cohesive look for your brand.

2. Use Presets

If you’re new to Lightroom, the presets will become your best friend. Presets are similar to what editing apps, like VSCO and A Color Story, call filters. A preset is a pre-determined set of corrections and adjustments that you can apply to numerous images to give it a consistent look and feel. You can make your own presets, or purchase them from places like Creative Market or Etsy!

3. Less Is More

With the countless features you have in Lightroom, you can adjust everything from exposure to saturation, vibrancy, or contrast – you name it, you can adjust it. But, remember to pump the breaks.  When you stare at an image for too long, it’s easy to get swept away and go a little overboard. A good rule of thumb is to edit the image to your liking, and then compare it to the original. Did you go too far? If so, scale it back. Maybe even step away for a few hours and jump back into it. You’d be surprised to see what your eye picks up after a break from the screen. Remember, the goal is to enhance and highlight aspects of your photo, not completely change it.
